COLUMBUS, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Police in Columbus are investigating after a Meriwether County high school student was killed and another student was injured in a shooting late Saturday night, officials said Sunday.
According to the Columbus Police Department, officers responded to shots fired on Macon Road near Lake Shore Road in Columbus around 11:50 p.m. Saturday.
When officers arrived, they reportedly found two vehicles with gunshots and a person inside each car suffering from gunshot wounds.
Police said both victims were taken to Piedmont Hospital, where one victim, identified as Daryus Bryant, died of his injuries at 12:53 a.m. Sunday. They said the other victim was rushed into surgery.
In a statement on social media Sunday, the Meriwether County School System identified Bryant as a Manchester High School student. They said another student was injured in the shooting but did not identify the student.
