A heartwarming sendoff Thursday inside Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport for a frontline law enforcer, Rex, a highly trained bomb-sniffing dog. At the age of 6, the German Shorthaired Pointer has spent the past five years working as a Transportation Security Administration Explosive Detection Canine alongside his handler, Regina Eisenberg. “He’s just the best,” Eisenberg said Thursday at his retirement ceremony. “These dogs are so special, and they are for TSA. They are so special and they do so much for the agency.” Regina and Rex first arrived at Mitchell International in August 2022 after working together for three years at Chicago O’Hare. The pair came to the Cream City to start the explosive detection program at Mitchell. Rex’s main job during his five-year career was to help screen passengers before they got to the security checkpoint, sniffing for any explosive devices in bags and luggage.
