Life has been normal for Karen Pekowitz — which is a pretty big deal. Back in January, Pekowitz became the first person in Massachusetts to receive a dual-chamber wireless pacemaker. Dr. Guy Rozen threaded the Abbott device into Pekowitz’s heart in a breakthrough procedure at Tufts Medical Center and changed her life. “I have so much more energy, and I can do all the activities I need to do,” Pekowitz said. That includes keeping up with her young students as a teacher in Wellesley. She even chased them around the gym recently. “I was running around and tagging the students, and I said, ‘I probably would not have been able to do this in October,'” she said. Pekowitz is now one of 10 people nationwide to be “drafted” by the Buffalo Bills’ Damar Hamlin for Abbott’s Heartmates team.
