Montgomery event honors violent crime victims, families [Video]

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Dozens of survivors and their families crowded Freewill Missionary Baptist Church for an evening of bonding through a tragic common denominator, the loss of a loved one.

The event comes a week after community members voiced frustrations at Montgomery City Hall about a recent spike in violent crime. Montgomery County District Attorney Darryl Bailey says he understand their concerns and hopes it translates to long term activism.

“It takes a community staying engaged, not just getting angry one night and going down to City Council. That’s great in demanding better, but you’ve got to stay involved,” Bailey said.

Daniel McCall Sr. and Faye McCall are one pair in the community that understand that message. Their son, Daniel, was murdered in 2015. Faye McCall was one of the keynote speakers at the event. They are sharing their healing process close to 10 years after their son’s death in the hopes they have a positive impact on other grieving families.
