LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers has joined other state attorneys general in a comment letter opposing the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) direct final rule that will prescribe energy conservation standards for appliances, including refrigerators, refrigerator-freezers and freezers.
The new rule was proposed by several advocacy groups and adopted wholesale by the federal DOE.
The recommended standards would apply to refrigerators and freezers manufactured or imported into the U.S., beginning in January 2029 or January 2030, depending on product type.
AG Hilgers and other state AG’s concern is the rule will lead to increased costs of the appliances nationwide.
“In its latest federal overreach, the Biden Administration has placed new restrictions on refrigerators and freezers that will artificially increase the prices of these household appliances for Nebraskans. I am calling on the Department of Energy to rethink this unpopular decision,” AG Hilgers said.
