New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) on Thursday announced body scanners, meant to detect firearms, will be tested and rolled out in subway stations amid a recent spike in crime in the system.

“I’m proud to announce that we are taking the next step forward in our ongoing efforts to make our subways even safer and ensure New Yorkers feel safer in the transit system,” Adams said at a news conference in a New York City subway station.

The mayor noted that, according to the law, the NYPD must publish information on the new electromagnetic weapons detection systems in order to test them for use in stations after a 90-day waiting period.

“This is a rule that we have to follow. We have to wait 90 days before we can implement this technology. But during the 90-day … waiting period, the NYPD will work to identify all vendors with effective technology and expertise,” Adams said.
