The slogan “Make America Great Again” presumes that our nation was once greater than it is presently. I’m thinking that, maybe, it was during World War II, when Washington was finally prompted to end its isolationism and join allies against the tyrannical likes of Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Hirohito. Today, there are Americans openly surrendering to Vladimir Putin.
Maybe it was when, in the face of economic upheaval, the president of the United States declared, “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.” Today we have wannabe leaders who thrive on instilling fear in the minds of their followers. Their fears range from perceived religious persecution to growing racial diversity to the alleged perils of the “deep state” — this, as such wannabes are more than happy to accumulate “dark money” for their campaign coffers.
