CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – North Carolina’s Transitional Aftercare Network (TAN) seeks volunteers to serve more inmates in prison and continue to mentor them in a faith-based way once released.

The North Carolina Department of Public Safety Chaplain Key states the United States recidivism rate is 45%, while it is 40% in N.C.

A North Carolina Western Region prison chaplain said while the state is doing better than the national average, there is still much room for improvement.

“People coming out of prison that don’t have families. They don’t have anybody to turn to. They take and put on the courthouse steps. ‘Here’s life, go to it.’ Nowhere to turn. Nowhere to … nobody to ask for help. So it causes recidivism,” N.C. Transitional Aftercare Network Western Region Coordinator Mabel Manning, who has dedicated her life to this work, said.
