Craig Hayslip, a faculty research assistant at Oregon State University’s Marine Mammal Institute, captured the elusive “green flash” on the ocean horizon April 20, 2024, at 8:10 p.m. He photographed the spectacle 15 miles west of Coos Bay, Oregon.

Though it seems paranormal, the momentary bizarre illumination is actually caused by light bending for a matter of seconds as the sun descends behind the sea. The flash can range from bright neon greens to electric blues. According to staff at the Marine Mammal Institute, they see the flash quite frequently when at sea.
