ROCHESTER, Minn.-Students from 29 different schools throughout southeast Minnesota turned out to compete in a regional welding competition hosted by the Southeast Service Cooperative at Rochester Community and Technical College’s Heintz Center, on Tuesday, April 30.
According to Nick Wobig, one of the event’s organizers, the goal of the Southeast Minnesota Welding Competition is to encourage high school students learning welding to learn more about the profession and see if they have the skills to succeed in the trade.
“This is a real world application where students are seeing exactly what a day in the life of someone who welds might look like,” Wobig said.
The event had around 150 students in attendance, but only 25 would be able to win in the competition overall.
Students were given 16 minutes to complete a pre-determined design through welding and were then graded on how the results they achieved.
