SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – According to a new report from the American Lung Association, the air quality in the Sioux Falls metro area is worsening.
The 25th annual “State of the Air” report takes data from a three-year period. The latest report looks at 2020-2022 and reflects the new annual particle pollution standard that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized in February.
For the Sioux Falls area, ground-level ozone pollution (smog) actually improved. Sioux Falls metro area fell from being ranked 111th-worst in the nation for smog to 116th. Minnehaha County saw an average of 0.3 unhealthy days per year, earning a grade of B.
Particle Pollution, however, worsened. The Sioux Falls metro area averaged 2 unhealthy days per year, which is a C grade. This jumped up Sioux Falls’ ranking from 59th-worst to 56th this year.
