PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The Arizona state legislature has approved a new bill that would bar local governments from having “no right on red” signs unless a registered engineer first determines at each affected intersection that a right turn on red is unsafe at all times or on specific days and times.
The bill, SB 1299, was narrowly approved by both the House and Senate and now awaits a determination from Gov. Katie Hobbs.
“So what this is just simply saying is that before somebody determines that you cannot turn right on red, there has to be a study to do it,” said Rep. Teresa Martinez (R). “If you all like standing in traffic, then that’s one thing, but as a person who does not like to be in traffic and who wants to make sure who gets to their destination ASAP, you’re probably going to want to vote ‘yes’ on this bill.”
