The British prime minister, Rishi Sunak, held a press conference with the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, in Berlin. He was asked whether the government was being honest with people about funding the UK’s plans to boost defence spending to 2.5% of GDP. Sunak insisted the plan is consistent with the government’s ability to ‘keep cutting taxes’, but that he would reduce the size of the civil service.
