Sabato reacts to meeting between Trump and Speaker Johnson – [Video]

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) — Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Mike Johnson is trying to display his relationship with former President Donald Trump as he faces a threat to oust him. Local political experts are reacting to this rendezvous.

Johnson and Trump met at Mar-a-Lago on Friday to talk about what they’re calling “election integrity.”

GOP Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia has threatened to force a vote to oust Johnson over government spending and aid to Ukraine.

Johnson was elected as speaker after multiple other candidates failed to secure the gavel last year. The difference this time is that Republicans have a much narrower margin in the House.

This is all possible because of a rule that former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy agreed on in order to secure his short-lived speakership. The rule states that a single member can initiate a vote to remove a speaker.
