WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – Senate Democrats want to change the federal government’s approach to marijuana and arrests related to possession.
The announcement was made a day after the Biden Administration recommended the drug be reclassified to a lower level.
“Reclassifying cannabis is necessary and it’s a long overdue step. But it is not the end of the story,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) at a press conference Wednesday.
Schumer, flanked by fellow Democrats, reintroduced the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act. The bill, if signed into law, would decriminalize marijuana, remove it from the federal list of controlled substances and expunge the records of people with related low-level convictions.
Schumer said, “Over the decades, millions of Americans, most often Americans of color, have had their lives derailed and destroyed by our country’s failed war on drugs. The consequences of this harmful campaign linger on to this very day.”
