The evolution of Emmy Russell continued on Sunday’s edition of “American Idol” as the younger singer/songwriter surprised with her pick of songs, and then made it through round as the show cut down to its top eight.
The granddaughter of country music legend Loretta Lynn got to work with Shania Twain, who was a mentor on Sunday’s show, and the country music superstar helped her craft a delivery of Blink 182′s “All The Small Things,” that brought the judges to their feet.
Twain encouraged Russell to push her vocals on the song, adding some yodels, and she crushed. But that wasn’t all she did. A big part of Russell’s story across the show has been how timid she can be a times, but she shook that off some, and played to the crowd.
It was an all-around, outside the box performance that showed her continued growth.
