A British tourist was hospitalized with severe wounds after he was attacked by a shark at a beach in the Caribbean on Friday.

The incident took place at Turtle Beach, along Great Courland Bay in Trinidad & Tobago. The government shut down seven beaches and a marine park after the 64-year-old victim suffered injuries to his left arm and leg, as well as puncture wounds to his abdomen and right hand, according to a CBS News report.

BBC identified the victim as Peter Smith, who was vacationing with his wife, Jo, and friends. Jo Smith said her husband “is aware of what is happening and is able to communicate a little, although he is still under strong medication,” according to BBC.

The BBC report added that officials said the incident involved a bull shark estimated to be eight to 10 feet long.
