Southport Sound performs free big band show April 17 [Video]

KENOSHA — The Southport Sound will play a free, live big band show April 17 at The Stella Ballroom and Hotel, 5706 Eighth Ave. in Downtown Kenosha.

The performance is 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

The event is free and open to the public.

The band’s staple repertoire from the swing era includes music of Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and Count Basie. The group also performs classics from every era including doo-wop, disco, Latin and classic rock ‘n’ roll.

Established nine years ago by musician, educator and U.S. Navy member John Sorensen, the band is now led from the guitar section by local musician Terry Peterson. The band features vocalist Hannah Sorensen-Mack, John Sorensen’s daughter. 

At the April 17 event, the band “will include the reading of some new charts, such as ‘Deacon Blues’ by Steely Dan and ‘Make Me Smile’ by Chicago. In keeping with a springtime theme, other songs may include ‘April in Paris,’ ‘Moonlight Serenade,’ ‘Misty,’ ‘In the Mood’ and ‘You Are the Sunshine …
