A start-up aims to revolutionize clean energy by harnessing unlimited solar energy from space. To make this futuristic idea a reality, Michigan-based start-up Virtus Solis aims to use SpaceX’s Starship.

If successful, this space-based solar farm will offer electricity to all areas on Earth at any time.

Space-based solar generating infrastructure, like orbiting arrays, or solar tiles-based satellites, require low-cost access to space. This is where SpaceX’s Starship comes in.

John Bucknell, a former SpaceX rocket engineer, started this startup in 2019. Bucknell presented this concept at the International Conference on Energy from Space in London on April 17.

This technology is still in the research and development stage, and the company aims to make it a reality by the end of this decade.
