(Gray News) — A woman in Canada got to witness a rarity of nature when she spotted a white albino moose crossing a highway in Alberta.

The witness, Tree Tanner, posted a video of the sight on X. The video shows the ghostly white moose as it moves down a small hill before rambling over the highway. Shortly behind it was another moose in a more usual brown color.

“What a spiritual moment we had last night seeing this Albino Moose with her twin,” Tanner wrote in the post.

According to Algonquin Accommodations, the genetic mutation called albinism happens to about one per every 20,000 moose, making the sight of one exceedingly rare.

Albinism occurs in a wide variety of animals, including humans, and happens in animals when its parents both carry a recessive gene for cells unable to produce melanin, which is the pigment needed to color skin, eyes, hair and scales.
