State regulators approve increases for Eversource and United Illuminating [Video]

BERLIN, CT (WFSB) – Electricity rates are increasing more and more. State regulators have approved another rate increase for Eversource and United Illuminating.

The town administrator in Vernon says this has become a hardship.

Michael Purcaro says homeowners and business owners are getting slammed.

He says it’s also hurting the town’s budget. Purcaro has started a petition with 15,000 signatures.

“The whole package, 19 percent, that’s a crushing blow. What I see are rate increases after rate increases. I see that from a government leader standpoint and I see that from a rate payer standpoint. I see compensation for their executives in the millions,” he said.

Cindy Petrella’s daughter owns a hair salon, and this increase is taking a toll on her.

“They are taking a huge impact. Things are already hard as it is – but to raise the rates so high it’s making things so difficult,” said Petrella.

Eversource says this request is not a rate case.
