INDIANAPOLIS – If you’re feeling stressed about your budget and monthly housing payments, you’re not alone, according to a new survey.
Real estate brokerage firm Redfin surveyed nearly 3,000 U.S. homeowners and renters and found nearly half–49%–said they are struggling and making sacrifices in order to make their monthly housing payments.
Of those who are struggling, 22% reported skipping meals. Another 20% are working extra hours at their job, while 20% reported selling belongings. And 20% said they had borrowed money from family or friends in order to get by.
People are also dipping into their savings; the survey found 14% of millennials who are struggling have already dipped into their retirement savings.
Those who purchased a home a few years ago may not be struggling as much because mortgage rates were closer to 3%. However, more recent home buyers are dealing with rates between 7% and 8%.
