SULLIVAN’S ISLAND, S.C. (WCSC) – Runners were out honoring the heroic efforts of the U.S. Coast Guard’s predecessors through an inaugural race on Sullivan’s Island.

Bringing home medals to signify their hard work, 82 runners ran 3.1 miles along the beach Saturday morning as part of the first-ever Coast Guard 5K Beach Run.

The event was hosted by Coast Guard Base Charleston and the National Park Service.

“We take pride in the Coast Guard community here and being a part of Sullivan’s Island and showing our enthusiasm to be here,” Lt. Daniel Brennan for the U.S. Coast Guard said.

South Carolina’s only life-saving station was on Sullivan’s Island from 1895 to 1973, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

In Jan., the Greater Charleston area was recognized as an official Coast Guard Community, which has a deep-rooted history for those who have served.
