Taxi drivers fight city of Atlanta proposal to change operations [Video]

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Taxi drivers in Atlanta are pushing back on a proposal that could change the way they do business.

Dozens showed up to the city’s transportation committee meeting to have their voices heard.

“The changes that they are proposing, they will not add value to our industry. Matter of fact, it will complicate things for us,” said Tony Igbere, a long-time taxi driver.

Back and forth on the proposal has been going on for three years.

Council member Bryon Amos, who sponsored the bill, says it’s aimed to help taxi drivers compete with the changing industry.

“There’s so much competition in the market with Uber and when it comes to the rideshares,” he said.

The legislation would make changes to the required color of taxis and remove the overhead light.

It also would switch out the meter for a digital system.
