Greg Wagner has been out checking for morel mushrooms in his usual spots along the Platte and Elkhorn Rivers. But, like all of his fellow compatriots, he won’t say exactly where.
“Those are coveted secrets,” said Wagner, a public information officer with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
He was happy to say, however, that morel mushroom season has begun.
Morels are now being found along eastern Nebraska’s river bottoms. In a few weeks, they will emerge in hilly wooded areas above rivers.
Wagner said it is important for morel mushroom hunters to know they must get permission from landowners to go onto private property, whether or not the land is posted.
