STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Although not apparent, the threat of drug abuse afflicts families all the same. In shedding light on the dangers of drug abuse and encouraging residents to dispose of unused prescription drugs, District Attorney Michael E. McMahon joined community leaders in promoting National prescription Drug Take Back Day, which falls on Saturday, April 27, this year.

Standing before the entrance to Super Health Pharmacy in Pleasant Plains, McMahon highlighted Staten Island efforts to curb the scourge of drug addiction.

In 2023, more than 110,000 Americans, including 7,000 New York state residents, died from an overdose. Among those New Yorkers were 150 Staten Islanders, as reported by McMahon.

“In my opinion, the drug epidemic is the crisis of our generation, certainly the health crisis of our generation,” McMahon said.
