The Oregonian/OregonLive won eight National Headliner awards, including a sweep of a video category and a “Best in Show” photo shared with the news organization by a crime victim.
The Oregonian/OregonLive swept the category of news video up to three minutes. First place went to a video on the cranberry harvest by Samantha Swindler. Second place went to a video about a wool farm by Vickie Connor. Swindler also placed third with a video about the iconic Oregon restaurant Cowboy Dinner Tree.
Samuel Gomez took “Best in Show” for his dramatic spot news photograph taken seconds before he was shot and wounded in downtown Portland. Gomez witnessed a road rage shooting in broad daylight while in Portland for a conference. He managed to snap a dramatic photo as the shooter prepared to fire at him.
Gomez was wounded and shared the photograph with The Oregonian/OregonLive while he was hospitalized.
