GREENSBORO, N.C. — CBS Mornings recently highlighted a heartwarming story of an 82-year-old widower, Dan Peterson, swept away by the hug of a four-year-old little girl, Nora, in a grocery store. That one hug helped Dan not feel so lonely since the death of his wife. Dan and Nora developed a friendship that lasted until he passed away in 2020.

This story got us thinking about the science behind hugs and their impact on our health and happiness. Hugs are good for your health because they trigger the release of oxytocin, often called the “love hormone.” Oxytocin strengthens our bonds with others, reduces stress hormones, and even boosts the immune system. Studies have shown that regular hugs can lower blood pressure, ease pain, and even help us fight off the common cold.
