COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – The bird flu virus, known as H5N1 and first identified in 1959, naturally spreads among wild birds like ducks and geese and then to chickens and other domestic poultry.

“We have not been informed by Colorado Department of Agriculture or the Colorado Department of Public Health Environment of any dairy cow in Colorado having been impacted. Of course that remains a concern,” said Dr. Bernadette Albanese with El Paso County Health.

Tuesday, the USDA has reported its detection in poultry operations across five states: Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, New Mexico and Texas. Human cases have been rare, with the vast majority resulting from direct contact with infected birds. Scientists remain vigilant for any signs of human-to-human transmission.
