US researching ways to use mining waste in EV battery production [Video]

A novel method developed by researchers has the potential to significantly boost the output of nickel ore extracted for use in electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

The endeavor is part of a new collaboration between the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory and Talon Metals, an American mining firm with intentions to extract high-grade nickel ore locally.

Argonne’s method utilizes mining byproducts as inputs for another production phase aimed at creating batteries essential for the expanding fleet of electric vehicles (EVs).

The team highlights the International Energy Agency forecast that in order to satisfy government goals for EVs, battery material supply chains must grow tenfold.
