KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Area veterans are set to come together and host a blood drive in a different kind of fight against the ongoing national blood emergency.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars say that on Tuesday, they will host the Third Annual National Day of Service complete with a blood drive in Kansas City. In an effort to fight the national blood shortage, the drive will be held at VFW Headquarters, 406 W. 34th St., in the Selman Conference Room between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30.

In January, VFW leaders noted that the American Red Cross declared an emergency blood shortage. The organization has experienced the lowest number of donors in the last two decades – a 40% drop.

Members, veterans who continue to serve their communities after service, said service events will happen worldwide from now through May. These activities will emphasize the importance of veterans as community leaders and volunteers.
