ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – After a strong third-place finish at the state tournament last season, East Anchorage is 8-0 in 2024, adding two more wins Wednesday in a doubleheader.
Thunderbirds catcher Valley Wakefield crushed two home runs as East rallied Bartlett 19-2 in a game that was called off after the 90-minute time limit.
“If it is not perfect, you’re not swinging,” Wakefield told herself at the plate before her first home run of the year. “I looked, it was perfect and I was like, ‘Jesus, please help me hit this.’ I hit the ball and I was like, ‘Yup, that’s over!’”
”I was very relieved — I was nervous I wasn’t going to hit any this year, but I did,” the sophomore standout said with a laugh.
Wakefield is just one bat in a lineup that “doesn’t have a weak spot,” according to head coach Virginia Griffith.
