The numbers

The Australian sharemarket finished Wednesday in the green after investors were encouraged by the latest inflation data which held steady at 3.4 per cent, unchanged from January.

The S&P/ASX 200 rallied in the afternoon to close 39.4 points, or 0.5 per cent, higher to 7,819.6 points, with healthcare, consumer staple stocks and industrials keeping the local bourse afloat.

The lifters

Emerald Resources wound up as the best-performing stock of the day with a 5.4 per cent gain, followed by Helia Group (up 3.8 per cent) and Brambles (up 3.4 per cent).
