In December, the state comptroller busted Union County for handing out $417,772 in stipends and tuition reimbursement to three top officials – people who have six-figure salaries – without first passing an ordinance prior to the vote.

That’s a no-go. That violated a 1972 law that requires such financial rewards to be approved through an ordinance – which includes hearings and public discussion – because that’s how you assure oversight and show citizens how their tax money is being spent.

But to the surprise of no one who has followed our state Legislature lately, Democratic lawmakers are in the process of eliminating the ordinance statute and further trashing transparency in New Jersey, because this is a day that ends with Y.
