Police in Brazil have now announced that they have officially launched a probe into what may have been former President Jair Bolsonaro’s latest attempt at escaping justice, which was staying at the Hungarian Embassy as investigations into his alleged coup attempt were going on.
The investigation came days after a bombshell report by The New York Times revealed that Bolsonaro stayed at the Hungarian Embassy for at least two nights, being escorted by security personnel and the Hungarian ambassador waiting on him during his stay.
This was a potential breach as Bolsonaro’s passports were confiscated by police prior to the incident, so he would not have tried to flee Brazil if an arrest warrant had been issued. His stay at the Hungarian Embassy meant that police could not arrest him as the embassy was considered Hungarian territory, therefore they had no jurisdiction to arrest the former president.
