Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) joined former President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate to promote new legislation that will require “proof of citizenship to vote.”
Johnson spoke at a press conference as the presumptive Republican nominee loomed over his shoulder. The legislation, which appeared to please Trump, comes as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) seeks to oust Johnson with a motion to vacate.
Johnson said the bill will require proof of citizenship to vote to mitigate voter fraud. Trump has falsely claimed the 2020 election was rigged against him and he has put that allegation front and center.
It is already illegal for non-citizens in the U.S. to vote in federal elections, and there is no evidence showing widespread cases of undocumented citizens voting.
