Mass. town says 4 USPS blue, curbside mailboxes target of thieves [Video]

Town officials in MetroWest are warning residents after thefts were reported from several blue, curbside USPS mailboxes. Lexington police said sometime between 4 p.m. on Saturday and the morning of Monday, the three USPS mailboxes in front of the Post Office at 1661 Massachusetts Ave. were accessed by an individual and mail inside was taken. Police said they believe the same person accessed the mailbox in the driveway of the Town Office Building at 1625 Massachusetts Ave. At this time, we believe the individual responsible was able to obtain a key that allowed them to access these mailboxes, Lexington police said. We do not know how or where the individual acquired the key.Police are working with the United States Postal Service to determine exactly what timethe mailboxes were accessed, and if there is any information to be shared about a potential suspect.”I think it’s going to give a lot of citizens pause as to whether they’re going to feel safe putting their mail into the sidewalk mailboxes,” said Lexington’s Barry Cunha. Anyone who dropped mail at one of the four mailboxes from Saturday afternoon to Monday morning is asked to contact the mails recipient to verify if the item was received. Anyone who mailed a check using one of the boxes should contact their bank. “You would think that they would be safe, obviously, because there’s so much traffic going by walking and cars,” said Gale Nill of Lexington. Police recommend using the mailbox inside the post office lobby, which is open 24 hours a day.”Whether they’re going to have to change all the locks now on the mailboxes, I don’t know. I don’t know what’s going to have to happen, but obviously, we can’t just can’t have them keep on breaking into mailboxes in town,” Cunha said. Several Boston-area postal workers have been targeted by robbers, who took their keys. Last Friday alone, three postal workers were robbed two in Dorchester and one in Everett. No injuries were reported in any of the robberies.
