They crawl, they fly, they’re loud, they crunch (more on this…), and they’re coming soon: Periodical Cicadas. The Kansas City area and a large chunk of the Midwest will soon play host to a brood of Periodical Cicadas – the big ugly bugs that only come out after a long period of years.Specifically, Brood XIX (19) is expected to arrive in late Spring/early Summer. Here’s what you need to know. When is the next cicada emergence?Brood XIX is expected to arrive in May and into June of 2024. The Missouri Department of Conservation says we last saw this brood in 2011, and it’s made up of four species of 13-year cicadas, bugs that pop out of the ground every 13 years. It’s sometimes called the Great Southern Brood since it stretches across 15 states, including much of Missouri, southern Illinois, Arkansas, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Why are experts saying there will be more cicadas in 2024? For the first time since 1803, Brood XIX is emerging at the same time as another swarm, Brood XIII (13). Brood XIII, known as the Northern Illinois Brood, makes its home primarily in parts of Iowa, Wisconsin, northern Illinois, northwestern Indiana, and perhaps the southern edge of Michigan. These are the 17-year cicadas. Will we see both broods of cicadas?Well, conservation experts say to never say never, but probably not. According to the MDOC, the 13-year brood and the 17-year brood both expected in 2024 “probably will not overlap geographically,” so we’re not dealing with an insect apocalypse around here. However, it is kind of cool to know the last time these two broods appeared together was when the Louisiana Purchase was signed and Thomas Jefferson was president. What do the insects look like?Periodical cicadas run slightly smaller than annual cicadas, the ones that come out toward the end of every summer. The periodical cicadas have black bodies, red eyes, and for wings with a gold, orange, or red tinge. They crawl. They fly. But they don’t jump. And they can’t harm people. So, no cicada bites. However, they can get really noisy. Adult males have an organ that produces a loud, raspy call used to attract females. Keep an eye on your tree trunks, and you might see a multitude of shed cicada skins left behind. When exactly will they arrive? They don’t have a plane ticket to track, or a specific date to pick out on the calendar, but, experts say there are triggers to watch for. Specifically, soil temperature eight inches below the surface must reach 64 degrees.MDOC says this often occurs after a nice warm, soaking rain, and usually in May. But they can show up as early as late April. Can you use insecticides on cicadas?MDOC said it’s “pretty much useless” to try. Your best bet is to protect small trees (the nymphs make slits in twigs to store eggs, thus weaking smaller trees ) by hosing them off with warm water, or wrapping foil or insect-barrier tape around them. You can also try covering a tree with netting. Yep, they’re crunchy. Many people worldwide eat cicadas. Birds also tend to feast on the insects.Experts also say a cicada emergence is a great time to go fishing, because of the large number of the insects that make their way to area water surfaces only to be gobbled up by the fish below. Have a dog that loves munching on the pests? You don’t want to let them overdo it. See the video above from 2015. How loud can they get?Cicadas can produce a mating call up to 90 dBA. That’s louder than lawnmowers and hairdryers. After 2024, when will we see them again?Per the Missouri Department of Conservation, Brood XXIII (23) should emerge in 2028. It comprises 4 species of 13-year cicadas.Brood III (3) should emerge in 2031. It comprises 3 species of 17-year cicadas.Brood IV (4) should emerge in 2032. It comprises 3 species of 17-year cicadas.

A push to keep the Royals and Chiefs in Kansas City, Missouri, with public funding is incomplete. The teams are looking for new options after Jackson County voters decisively defeated a sales tax referendum earlier this month to help finance a new downtown ballpark for the Royals and renovations for Arrowhead Stadium.”I think that’s something that’s going to take time. It’s not something that’s going to just kind of be thrown up into the ether out of nowhere,” Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said. “And to the extent that there have been any discussions that suggest otherwise. I don’t think that’s necessarily an accurate description of what the city would ever look to do. I think we want to be additive.”Recently, the Kansas City Council approved a record $2.3 billion budget, which takes effect in May.To do it, city leaders dipped into the general fund or savings account to help pay for it.Lucas was noncommittal about any potential source of city funding for a stadium deal.”I think it’s somewhat premature to even know what those steps would be,” he said. The mayor said any deal involving the city would require partners. The Chiefs had previously indicated their Arrowhead plans included $500 million in state or other public funding. However, the Missouri state budget must be finalized by May 10.A spokesman for Governor Mike Parson says there’s currently no money for the Chiefs or Royals in that budget, and any effort to include a significant budget piece for the teams would require a deal with lawmakers. What’s happened since the Question 1 election?Jackson County Executive Frank White has not spoken with the Chiefs or Royals since the electionJackson County voters reject stadium sales tax extension by an overwhelming marginThe Kansas City (Kansas) Chiefs? But you know what? The last time we did this, we built some stadiums that have been beautiful for 50 years,” Lucas said. “We do big projects in Kansas City all the time. We do them well. We do them in collaboration with our community, importantly, and we make sure that it makes sense financially for this city long term.”Lucas also suggested Jackson and Clay counties as possible government partners in a stadiums deal.Clay County Presiding Commissioner Jerry Nolte says he hasn’t recently heard from the Royals about a deal.Previously, the team had indicated Clay County could be a potential site for a new ballpark. There’s been no public indication that the Jackson County government is working on a new deal with the Chiefs and Royals, their two current tenants at the Truman Sports Complex, after the failed tax referendum vote. The Chiefs and Royals currently aren’t commenting on what their next moves might be.

The Auditorium Plaza Garage at Barney Allis Plaza is closing down for good as the city prepares to tear it down next month.Originally built in 1954 and last renovated in 1984, this Kansas City garage has reached the end of its life. The building, located between 12th and 13th Streets and Central and Wyandotte Streets, was initially built to accommodate parking at the Kansas City Convention Center. In just a few weeks, it will be completely demolished. What to do with this parking garage has been debated for years. The plaza and its underground parking garage have been in disrepair for a long time. The lower levels were closed due to crumbling concrete. The upper parking levels are also rarely used, and the entire garage is suffering from erosion and outdated electrical infrastructure. It is estimated that repairing the garage as it stands would take around $30 million and only extend the life of the garage for 10 more years.Instead, a new garage will be in place by 2026. The proposed garage would have 583 spaces, significantly less than the 975 it once held, which has worried some council members. But the team in charge of the design and build says adding more would be expensive – and those nearly 600 planned spaces are the right fit now. This will be a 24-month construction period set to be completed by 2026, just in time for Kansas City to host the World Cup.The city says the garage makes up less than four percent of the overall available parking with a five-to-seven-minute walk from the Convention Center. This website has details on the redevelopment project and parking alternatives set to be completed over the next two years at the site.
