KINGSTON, Tenn. (WVLT) – The Tennessee Valley Authority’s (TVA) Kingston Fossil Plant now has a concrete future, the agency announced Tuesday. It’s a major development in an ongoing saga about plans for what is one of TVA’s most prolific energy generators.

The Kingston plant will be converted into a “first-of-its-kind” energy complex consisting of natural gas, solar and battery storage. The announcement means TVA will be using the facility for all three of its previously-proposed projects.

TVA President Jeff Lyash said the decision will benefit all 10 million people in TVA’s seven-state service area.

“TVA is building the energy system of the future to ensure low rates, high reliability and increasingly cleaner generation,” Lyash said. “The decision to retire Kingston supports this generational transition and aligns with our goal to reduce carbon.”
